Sustanon: History And Chemistry
Sustanon was originally developed in the 20th century for medical purposes. The idea behind it was that it could provide a more sustained maximal release of testosterone, hence its name. It was obtained by mixing different forms of testosterone that had different rates of release. While the sustained “peaked” action of it is debated, it is still among one of the most commonly bought and used anabolics in the market.
Mechanisms Of Action
Regarding the primary impact of the mixture on the body, Sustanon has no primary difference, in the nature of its impact at least, than any of its single ingredient counterparts used on their own.
It binds to androgen receptors at certain cells, in order to change their molecular signaling, and by consequence, action, and exerts a number of global changes in the body over time, like a greater production and accumulation of protein, a reduced protein breakdown rate, a greater level of bone mineral absorption and density, and a higher red blood cell production and density.
Much like the single ingredients, it’s also partially processed by aromatase and 5-alpha-reductase enzymes to produce estrogen and dihydrotestosterone, respectively.
As mentioned above, the basic chemical of testosterone is no different amongst the four ingredients found in Sustanon. What does change, however, is the attached chemical delivery agent, which dictates its rate of release and subsequent metabolization.
The four ingredients found in Sustanon are:
- Testosterone Propionate, with a chemical half-life of 4 to 5 days, at 60 milligrams
- Testosterone Phenylpropionate, also with a chemical half-life of 4 to 5 days, at 30 milligrams
- Testosterone Isocaproate, with a half-life of 9 days, at 60 milligrams
- Testosterone Decanoate, also with a half-life of 9 days, at 100 milligrams
Together, these are intended to peak individually at their designed rates, in order to maintain a “constant peaking” effect and, in theory, maximal and sustained results for the user at a far lower administration frequency than would be necessary for individual forms of testosterone.
Dosing And Use
Because of the higher stimulus desired, the dosing for recreational, aesthetic or competitive use of Sustanon would naturally be higher than that of medical use.
Common dosing for such a use would be between 250, all the way to 2000 milligrams weekly, taken as a single administration, as an intramuscular injection for males, depending on the prior experience of the user with anabolics, with more seasoned users drifting towards the higher end of that spectrum.
Females are strongly advised to stay away from its use altogether, due to the high risk of virilization that would be characteristic of its use.
Programs And Combinations
Because of the potent and consistent, as well as the long lasting nature of Sustanon, it is normally found in programs where the goal is either slow and efficient gains in lean mass and strength or more moderate to rapid periods where the goal is mass and strength gains at a less efficient rate.
