Testosterone has a rich history in both medical and recreational uses. The item was originally extracted from animal tests and used in research settings, this then evolved into medical uses after scientists found out how to synthesize it in a lab. It then slowly found its way into the programs of athletes and bodybuilders during the 20th century.
Structurally, the main build of the drug is no different than the testosterone hormone, that is endogenously produced in your body. The main difference is in the attached chemical delivery agent, known as an ester, which influences how quickly it’s released into the body and, therefore, how rapidly the effects of it take place.
For example, testosterone on its own would only last a few hours in the body. However, with the enanthate ester joined onto its structure, this is extended to an active life of approximately 9 days. This makes a big difference in how often the drug needs to be administered, which is discussed in further detail below. First, we’ll take a look at how it is processed in the body to obtain this effect.
Mechanisms Of Action
Once administered into the body, exogenous testosterone acts in much the same way as its endogenous counterpart. Namely, it acts on the body by combining with androgen receptors at select cells, in order to change the molecular signaling within them.
This happens globally all over the body and, over time, leads to a substantial and consistent rise in protein synthesis and a concurrent reduction in breakdown. It also causes an overall retention in nitrogen, bone mineral absorption, and a rise in red blood cell production.
Meanwhile, it is also partially processed into estrogen by enzymes known as aromatase enzymes. It’s also broken down by 5-alpha-reductive enzymes to help exert its effect. These all lead to the effects, both positive and negative, that make it such a popular addition to medical treatments and the programs of athletes and bodybuilders, the latter of which is discussed in detail below.
Testosterone enanthate is both a moderately paced and moderately efficient steroid for athletic purposes. That is to say, it is neither the fastest nor the slowest in terms of acting in the body, and it will cause some inefficient side effects in terms of lean mass accrual.
Because of this, it is mainly used during programs where the overall goal is either the relatively lean and gradual accrual of mass and fitness attributes like strength and power, or during more rapid, and more inefficient, programs of muscle and strength gain.
These periods can vary in terms of how long they last, with some lasting from 12 weeks all the way up to a year of continuous use. However, it should be noted that longer periods of use, while resulting in greater gains, will also drastically increase the risk of incurring side effects.

Dosing And Administration
As with almost any drug on the market, the dosage that is used with testosterone enanthate will vary depending on a number of factors. These would include the purpose of its use, the user’s gender, his/her prior experience with anabolics, and the user’s sensitivity to its effects, which can vary substantially. Not to mention any other anabolic it may be paired with.
Common dosages for male users include anywhere from 250 to 500 milligrams weekly, and all the way up to 1000 milligrams weekly, administered through intramuscular injection twice weekly. This would normally be administered in sites like the lateral deltoid muscle in the side of the shoulder, or in the buttocks in the gluteal muscles.
The testosterone hormone has a range of both desirable and undesirable effects when used in any setting. However, the higher doses and more prolonged use means this is especially the case with recreational or competitive users. Below, we take a look at both to determine the full impact its use will have on the body.
As indicated above, there are a range of positive results from the use of this drug, including:
- Accelerated and accentuated lean tissue growth and development
- Greater bone mineral absorption and density
- Higher red blood cell count and work capacity
- Greater levels of strength and power output
While there is a range of beneficial effects of testosterone enanthate 250, it also has its fair share of undesirable effects, including:
- Cardiovascular issues, such as reduced blood vessel wall flexibility, increased LDL cholesterol, higher blood pressure, and an enlarged heart.
- Androgenic issues, like increased bouts of oily skin and acne, increased risk of balding, and virilizing effects in female users.
- A reduction or cessation of endogenous testosterone manufacturing, which will persist for a time after exogenous use has stopped.
- Estrogen-mediated issues like increased water and fat gain with lean mass increases, as well as the risk of gynecomastia development in men.
It should be noted that some of the above-mentioned
issues can be managed. The estrogen-mediated issues for example, can be
mitigated with the use of either Aromatase Inhibitors or SERMs. Meanwhile,
androgenic issues can be managed with the use of a 5-alpha-reductase inhibitor.
